What is Epic Systems?

Started in 1979 by computer programmer Judith R. Faulkner in a Wisconsin basement, Epic is a privately held, employee-owned software company specializing in healthcare. As of June 2025, 3,600+ hospitals in the U.S. utilize Epic EHR, accounting for just under 38% of the inpatient EHR market share. Epic stores patient health data, manages appointments and billing, and makes treatment plans. MyChart is Epic's patient portal allowing patients to access health information, schedule appointments, and communicate with providers.
